Standard Development Complete

Key positions

  1. The Modern Defense Begins: With 1...g6, Black signals the Modern Defense. You're allowing White to take the center, but you'll challenge it later with piece pressure and pawn breaks.
  2. The Fianchetto Complete: White has a classical center (e4+d4). Your dark-squared bishop on g7 pressures this center from afar. Now you need to decide your setup.
  3. Standard Development Complete: Black has completed standard development with ...d6, ...Bg7, ...Nf6. Castle next, then prepare ...c5 or ...e5.
  4. Ready for ...c5: Both sides have castled. Now is the time for ...c5! This challenges White's center and opens the c-file for your rook.
  5. Typical Middlegame Structure: The typical Modern Defense middlegame. Black has completed ...c5 and has a solid position. Now focus on piece activity.
  6. Facing the Austrian Attack: White plays the aggressive Austrian Attack with f4. They want to push f5 and launch a kingside attack. You must react immediately!
  7. The ...e5 Alternative: Instead of ...c5, Black can play ...e5 to challenge the center directly. This leads to different structures.
